The process to create a new school district in southeast Salt Lake County has begun!
The Lieutenant Governor’s office has received the formal boundary descriptions for the new school district and has issued a “Certificate of Entity Creation” which formally established the new school district.
Interlocal Committee
The Interlocal Committee is made up of the Mayors of Salt Lake County, Cottonwood Heights, Alta, Draper, Midvale, and Sandy. These mayors are statutorily tasked with supporting the transition process to create a new school district until a new school board takes office.
Asset Transition Teams
Two asset transition teams have been appointed representing the new (east) school district and the remaining (west) school district. They will meet over the next six months to determine how the Jordan School District’s assets should be divided. All schools which serve specific geographic areas will be part of the district in which they are located. The assets which serve district-wide purposes are those which will be divided.
Education Transition Team
The Interlocal Committee has hired Dr. John Bennion to chair an education transition team. Dr. Bennion is the former superintendent of the Salt Lake and Provo School Districts. The education transition team also includes Rickie McCandless, the former Associate Superintendent of the Salt Lake School District, and Dr. Sandra Petersen, the former Assistant Superintendent of the Davis County School District. The education transition team has three primary purposes
- To solicit discussion on how the new school district should be organized
- Gather input about the new school district through the school community councils and through core and ad hoc committees
- Organize input from stakeholders into major themes and present them as recommendations and options for the new school board to consider

Election of a New School Board
The elections to choose a school board for this new district will be held on June 24. The election will be an open election with no primary. Anyone interested in running for a seat on the new school board need to file with the Salt Lake County Clerk’s Office between March 7 and 17. The County Council has determined the voter district boundaries for these seven new school board seats. The map showing these district boundaries is available in the download area of this website. The new school board will take office on July 15, 2008.
Once the new school board is elected, they will make decisions regarding programming and staffing for the new school district. The new school district will begin offering services on July 1, 2009.
